bmibaby Elite League Sunday, December 7
Coventry Skydome
Cassidy Coventry Blaze 4 Cardiff Devils 2
After a five-game winning streak the Cardiff Devils, sponsored by 1two1cars.com Vehicle Leasing & Contract Hire Specialist, came unstuck on Sunday, going down 4-2 against the Cassidy Coventry Blaze in the Skydome.
Despite leading 2-1 through goals from Wes Jarvis and Jason Silverthorn, the under-strength Devils could not contain the Blaze, who are 3-0 against Cardiff in league fixtures this season.
Barrie Moore scored twice while Jonathan Weaver and Scott Kelman chipped in with one each for the second-ranked Blaze.
The result leaves the Devils in sixth place on 28 points, ten behind league leaders Sheffield, who travel to Cardiff next weekend.
The Devils were again without injured forward trio Lee Cowmeadow, Marc Fulton and leading scorer Mike Prpich.
American defenceman Jon Coleman made his Coventry debut after joining on short notice to cover for injured blueliner Matt Soderstrom.
Moore scored his first after only 70 seconds, firing the puck past Peter Aubry after taking a feed from Corey LeClair.
The Devils came back straight away when Jarvis scored at 3:12, with Matt Towe providing help on the play.
Silverthorn made it 2-1 at 8:04 on the man advantage. Tyson Teplitsky and Brad Voth set up the Canadian centreman for his 12th of the year.
The visiting Devils held the lead until past the halfway point, but Moore’s second started a Blaze revival. With Voth serving a slashing penalty, LeClair and Danny Stewart combined to set up Moore to equalise at 32:45.
Former Devil Sylvain Deschatelets created the Blaze third, setting up versatile D-man Weaver to score at 37:38, again on the powerplay.
Kelman completed the scoring at 48:54, ending any hope of Devils comeback after being played in by Adam Calder and Dan Carlson.
The Devils have only one game next weekend as they host the Steelers on Sunday night in the Bay (6:00pm).

Cardiff Devils Match Preview
Cassidy Coventry Blaze vs Cardiff Devils
bmibaby Elite League game Sunday, December 7
Coventry Skydome, 6:00pm
The Cardiff Devils, sponsored by 1two1cars.com Vehicle Leasing & Contract Hire Specialist, aim to extend their five-game winning streak when they face the Cassidy Coventry Blaze on Sunday night at the Skydome (6:00pm).
Coming off Saturday’s overtime win against Manchester, the Devils are back on the road to face the second-ranked Blaze, who hammered the Newcastle Vipers 9-2 in their last outing.
Phil Hill (8+8) notched the overtime winner against the Phoenix and has four goals in six games.
Imports Mike Prpich and Marc Fulton will miss the game through injury and both are undergoing treatment to get them back on to the ice as soon as possible. Welsh forward Lee Cowmeadow also missed Saturday’s game and remains sidelined.
With the three players missing, Welsh pair Neil Francis and Ben Davies have received increased playing time and both had solid outings against the Phoenix, forcing turnovers and controlling the puck in the offensive zone.
The Blaze lead the season series 2-1 after a trio of three entertaining games between the two rivals, but the Devils won the only previous meeting in the Skydome this year.
With Prpich out, Jason Silverthorn (11+19) leads the Devils in points. Having had four games under his belt since returning from injury, Brad Voth (3+8) is coming into form and made a big impact against the Phoenix by winning possession and disrupting Manchester’s transition game.
Adam Calder was the difference maker in the last meeting, scoring the equalised in regulation and the decisive penalty shot in the Bay on November 1 to give the Blaze a 5-4 win.
Calder (20+18) may be the reigning league MVP, but he’s currently second in team scoring behind former Devil Sylvain Deschatelets (12+28). The French Canadian playmaker lit up the Vipers for six points and has two goals against his previous club this season.
The Blaze have suffered problems with injuries too, notably Swedish defenceman Matt Soderstrom, who is out with a stomach complaint and will visit a specialist on Monday, according to the Blaze website.
With Soderstrom sidelined, Coventry coach Paul Thompson has drafted in former Nottingham blueliner Jon Coleman. The American, who also holds and Irish passport and does not require a work permit, will debut tonight.

Cardiff Devils Match Report
bmibaby Elite League Saturday, December 6
Cardiff Bay Arena
Cardiff Devils 2 Manchester Phoenix 1 (OT)
The Cardiff Devils, sponsored by 1two1cars.com Vehicle Leasing & Contract Hire Specialist, made it five wins in a row as they came through 2-1 in overtime against the Manchester Phoenix on Saturday night in the Bay.
Phil Hill scored the winner with 34 seconds remaining in sudden death after man of the match Doug MacIver’s regulation marker.
Netminder Peter Aubry was again impressive between the pipes. He made 26 saves for the Devils, who stand in sixth place on 28 points - two points behind Manchester.
Lucas Burnett replied for the Phoenix, who picked up a three-point weekend after beating Belfast on Friday.
Devils forward Mike Prpich and Marc Fulton were scratched from the active roster with injuries. The Phoenix were also a man down as second-line forward Bruce Mulherin continued his role of acting bench coach.
It was the second meeting in a week between the teams after Cardiff escaped the Altrincham Ice Dome last Sunday with a 5-3 win.
The Devils, who now lead the season series with the Phoenix 2-1, took the lead late in the first period. After Brad Voth failed to corral a lateral feed, the puck squirted back towards MacIver on the blueline.
The giant D-man stepped forward and let go with a pinpoint slapshot, sending the puck over Phoenix netminder Stephen Murphy’s shoulder at 19:06. Tyson Teplitsky was also credited with an assist on the goal, which was MacIver’s first of the season.
After a scoreless second, the game turned in the third frame when Jay Latulippe was penalised for interference. The infraction came midway through a Cardiff powerplay and it gave Manchester a five-on-four of their own once they returned to full strength.
Latulippe was standing at the sin-bin door waiting to come back on when Burnett equalised at 48:37. The goal came when David Beauregard and Luke Fulghum combined to feed Burnett, who fired in from close range only moments after Aubry had made a superb save from a similar position.
In overtime, with the prospect of penalties drawing nearer, the Devils settled it when Hill chased up a rebound to whack the puck in at 64:26 assisted by Wes Jarvis and Latulippe.
Cardiff now travel to the Skydome on Sunday to take on Sylvain Deschatelets and the Coventry Blaze (6:00pm).
